You may know someone who is homeless near where you live or work but are uncertain about what you can do. Here are a few suggestions, links and resources to help.

1: SAY HELLO

What people experiencing homelessness want and need more than almost anything is to be seen and acknowledged. Find the courage to stop and say hello. You don’t have to give money but just by connecting you can and will help.

2: GET INFORMED

  • Anyone who is homeless or at risk of becoming homeless can call the free helpline at Shelter for advice
  • Get information on access to local services plus a wide range of resources at Homeless Link 
  • In London, Atlas have a comprehensive list of links to local charities, day centres and health services.
  • Educate yourself on the reasons behind homelessness. Watch The Wisdom of Trauma film featuring Dr Gabor Mate.

3 TAKE ACTION

Members of the public can alert  Streetlink to any person who is sleeping rough. Streetlink are a platform that connects people on the streets with local authorities and charities who can help them.

Help someone who is homeless or vulnerable find their NEXT MEAL. A comprehensive list of charity food outlets across the UK.

Become a Skywalker. Volunteer for Under One Sky. Join or support the Under One Sky movement for change. Join experienced volunteers on a Skywalk where you will connect with and make a positive impact on someones life. Volunteering is hugely rewarding and by joining others you will be helping to create a better, more cohesive society where people matter.

Contact your local council if you see people in distress on the streets or are concerned about the growing numbers of people who are homeless in your community. Your local council are officially responsible for their welfare and have a duty to assist.
